HOUSEBREAKING
Housebreaking your new companion doesn’t have to be an ordeal for either you or your new pup. The Chinese Crested, though a Toy Breed dog is fairly easy to train. He is intelligent and has a strong desire to please. With a little forethought, planning and consistency in activity, you and your pup will have it down in no time at all.
First, have realistic expectations. A young pup will need to relieve himself more frequently than he will when he’s older just like children. In the beginning, try to take the pup outside after waking, eating or just before going to bed in the evening. Expand this routine to fill in time when he might be playing. Try to get him out every few hours at first. See what works best for your pup. But do remember that consistency is the key and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Praise him when he does go outside and understand that there will be mistakes. Correct him with firm words only when you are present and witness mistakes.
Even older dogs that have come from a housebroken environment will need time to adjust to the expectations at their new home. Use the same consistency and routine that you would with a young pup. Understand that they will need to learn what is expected. It also tends to helps if you have another dog that is housebroken and knows the routine to help teach the newcomer.
You and your pup will have success more quickly if you plan his schedule around yours. You will have to stick to this routine and it needs to be one that you can realistically accomplish yourself. Then give your new friend time and you both will succeed.
